CONTEMPORARY ARTIST AND DESIGNER
INFORMATION :
This project is about celebrating the local interaction between typography and graphic design and the urban environment.
I would like to talk about this concept from an Indian perspective, throughout the cities, the walls, concrete structures, abandoned buildings, monuments, road signs, and other infrastructural elements are covered with local cultural history, whether it be an advertisement, movie posters, political statements or graffiti everything tells a story. Most of these are still hand-painted therefore it carries forward the design language, typography and aesthetics of a city. Some of the brand advertisements and other content hold a significant place in the culture. You can also point out some behavioural characteristics by looking at the paintings on the structures.
The sculpture facilitates thinking about some mundane visuals that we stumble upon in our urban environment. These visuals also mean something in the long run and at some point, they will be a part of art history.
With this project, I wanted to embrace the urban landscape that these hand-painted signs create and make a sculpture series that allows this aspect of urban design to come inside our homes. I used ceramics to create this series because that makes it much more approachable and appreciable for a layman. For this project, I am using some interesting methods of making such as 3D displacement and 3D printing, combining them with traditional methods such as slip casting. The Idea here was also to test these methods in order to achieve a result with the desired amount of details and intricacy.
